Synopsis

I'm mister imposter, I'm mister sus...

Among Waifus 18+ is a parody puzzle game developed and published by Romantic Room. It came to Steam in mid December 2021. Like many parodies, Among Waifus is likely to completely lose its context over the next few years and remain a weird sort of time capsule of the insane popularity Among Us had during the first years of the pandemic.

I'm going to do my best to explain the plot, but this game is a sever victim of Google Translate. Entire blocks of text are virtually unreadable due to Russian idioms not translating to English in any way that really makes sense. The broad strokes are pretty easy to understand though. You're Kara, a psychologist on one of the first space expeditions for humanity. You and your crew of totally stacked babes have to survive an alien attack, and determine if there's an alien hiding... AMONG US.

While the plot is obviously a play on the popular indie game Among Us, the gameplay is completely different. There's no gameplay similarity at all. Among Waifus is a story driven puzzle game, which little to no real whodunnit action. There aren't any accusations to make or secrets to hide. You simply read the story in a Visual Novel format, solve 3 Lemmings style puzzles, and then get a sex scene. The sex scenes are generally devoid of any context, and have little to nothing to do with the story. Every three levels there's a polaroid picture to pick up which will unlock a new sex scene.

The aliens (called Suslops) attack by doing things like sabotaging lights, messing with your engines, and other sabotages that are going to look familiar to any fans of Among Us, or anyone who's been close enough to an Among Us player to experience cultural osmosis. One by one your crewmates start to drop until there's just you, the captain, and the imposter. You're given a timed challenge to save the captain at the end of the game, but it seems that the devs never planned for anyone to actually complete the timed challenge because she dies whether you save her or not. No difference in dialogue at all.

Ultimately you save the ship, but I'm not sure what the ending of this game looks like, because the final level is glitched. I thought the difficulty had simply been cranked way up as an effort to make the game last a little longer before unlocking the final sex scene (something pretty common with indie porn games) however after spending a lot of time trying to beat it, I discovered that no one in the community seems to be able to beat that level because of one of the puzzle platforms not moving correctly. Maybe it'll be fixed someday and I can update this review with a picture of the final sex scene, but not today.

Overview

As a sucker for parody, I was excited to play this game at first, but it's a pretty big disappointment. Most of the game is unreadable dialogue, and the puzzles only take a couple of seconds to beat. The VN portion was built from scratch meaning there were no controls to advance or rewind the text. No way to skip over dialogue I'd already read. The sex scenes are animated, but just barely. It's the type of motion tween animation that anyone who's spent more than a few minutes playing indie port games will immediately recognize. Ultimately Among Waifus feels like something that was pumped out to take advantage of the Among Us zeitgeist. That said this feels like one of those old Newground porn parody games that me and my friends would have talked about in hushed tones as middle schoolers 20 years ago or however long ago that was. I'm wondering if games like this have the same taboo power that Newgrounds games had back in the day.

Horny Parts

• Space Suits

  I really like the retro-horny style of the space suits. It reminds me of Barbarella.

• Neked

  If you don't like the space suits, there's an option in the menu to have all the characters be naked

• Sex Scenes

  Every 3 levels you get a sex scene added to the gallery. For some reason when they first load they start on the end scene, which kind of ruins the tension. If you click back to the beginning though, you can see a progression of lewdity.

• Ahegao

  Have you noticed how ahegao has functionally jumped off the pages of eromanga and is now like, just part of our culture?

Horniest Part

• Tentacles

  It wouldn't be an scifi porn game without tentacles!

Maybe I'm not the target audience for this game but the combo of bad translations and boring sex scenes pretty much did it in for this game in my eyes. The final level being glitched and the premise being dated doesn't bode well for it either.
