Deep Space Waifu: Fantasy is a bullet hell style shoot-emu-up (shmup) game developed and problished by Neko Climax Studios. It released on Steam on September 27 2018. It's the 3rd (?) game in the Deep Space Waifu series of games.

The world is in danger! You take the role of Bear and have to defeat a cast of fantasy-based characters to purge the evil deity that has possessed CLITORIUS. But first, you have to find it! Take control of a space ship and defeat alien invaders, all the while stripping a giant anime waifu!

In this game, you're given a world map with different girls from which to choose. Different paths sometimes require different items, so you can't fully jump around to levels from the beginning, but there's a fair bit of back and forth if you guess the wrong direction. Luckily there isn't any penalty for guessing wrong, you just pick a different girl that you're able to access.

Each girl will have a short bit of dialogue to set the scene. They start off combatant, but after they're defeated, they join you in your quest to save Clitorius. You find girl, talk to girl, fight girl, and move on. Deep Space Waifu: Fantasy is a short, simple, and sweet game that doesn't overstay its welcome.

The fights with the waifus take place over their bodies, generally in a sexy pose. As you defeat alien ships, you also get targeted pieces of clothing that you can destroy. After defeating a waifu, their picture is added to the gallery. But only at the level of undress that you managed to achieve in the fight. If you want to see the whole proverbial enchilada, you have to take the time in-game to blow up all their clothing.

The final boss is a little different from the rest of the battles, in that instead of fighting aliens that are swarming your waifu, you're fighting the waifu herself. This fight was refreshing, as it would have been anticlimactic if it was just another regular fight.

Bullet hells are another genre of game that I've weirdly latched onto in the past, and taken the time needed to get good. Coming from Touhou, Deep Space Waifu fantasy is a lot easier, but still plenty of fun. There are different difficulties to chose from, but they don't increase the number of enemies or projectiles; they just adjust the speed. In Gentleman mode however, you have the added challenge of getting an instant loss if you blow up any of your waifu's clothes.

The combat feels good, and the hitboxes are fair. Neko Climax Studios followed the bullet-hell tradition of having your hitbox be a tiny clump of pixels in the middle of the character model, which means if you're a veteran to the genre, you should feel right at home.

Horny Parts

• The Waifus

  There's really only one horny part in this game. Well, there's multiple parts but they're built from the same base. The girls' dialogue models, in-game models, and gallery models are all identical. There's pretty much just one image per girl, with various levels of clothing put on top. For a 2 dollar game with only about an hour of gameplay, that's perfectly acceptable.

This game is short, cheap, fun, and has some great art. It's also aesthetic as fuck. The music is catchy vaporwave, but there is only a handful of songs so it can get a little repetitive. I will likely play the other Deep Space Waifu games after this, though I'm sad that there doesn't seem to be any new entries in the series since 2018.

This game has a 1 Hand Mode that gets unlocked after clearing a level and removing all of the waifu's clothing. Presumably this mode is so you can jerk it while you play, but that seems too difficult, even for me.

To get past a waifu's underwear, you have to have the nude patch installed. Luckily the patch is literally just creating an empty file called nude.patch and sticking it in \Steam\steamapps\common\Deep Space Waifu Fantasy\Deep Space Waifu Fantasy_Data. I honestly wish all nude patches were that simple. The nude patch for Apostle requires downloading an unsigned exe from their site, which is a big YIKES for me.
