Kandagawa Jet Girls
Skip Straight to the Horny Parts
Synopsis
Bust babes on (water) bikes!
Kandagawa Jet Girls is a watercraft racing game developed by Honey∞Parade Games and published in the US by Xseed Games. It became available in Japan on the PS4 in January 2020 and came to US PS4 and Windows later that same year. Jet Girls is based on the 2019 anime by the same name. While the announcement for this show and game came from Kenichiro Takaki, best known for his work with the Senran Kagura franchise, he doesn't seem to have actually produced this game.
Jet Girls appears to use a modified version of the engine used for modern Senran Kagura games such as Estival Versus, Peach Beach Splash, or Burst Re:Newal. Some of the weapons from Peach Beach Splash are even incorporated in the racing gameplay.
Jet Racing is life! All over Kandagawa, high school girls pair into groups of 2 and settle all their disputes by racing their super-powered jet skis! Kandagawa Jet Girls has to take control of seven different teams of two. Each from another school, each with their own problems and reasons for racing.
I've been a fan of Senran Kagura since the beginning. Or at least, the beginning that was available to me in the US, which was Senran Kagura Burst for the 3ds. I had to buy it digitally, and I had to hide it from my girlfriend at the time, who took a less than favorable outlook on horny games. While Jet Girls takes place in a completely different world from Senran Kagura, it borrows heavily from it. It even has two characters from SK as DLC characters (Ryōna and Ryōbi, the incestuous sub/dom sisters).
Characters / Story
The story unfolds across 8 chapters, with a stand-alone story for each of the 7 teams. A short wrap-up chapter at the end completes the arc. While each team has its own unique issues they're trying to solve, the solution is always the same. Jet Racing and friendship.
The Kandagawa Jet Girls are the first team. Rin Namiki and Misa Aoi, an unlikely pairing of short and perky with tall and stoic. Their story is based around growing their friendship and winning the Kandagawa cup, even though they're underdogs. This story arc is unique because it heavily features the rival team, DRESS. In contrast, most of the other storylines are more insular.
DRESS is the team-to-beat, comprised of Kaguya Shijuuin, the mature honors student from an influential family, and Kuromaru Manpuku, the food-obsessed descendent of a family of Shinobi. They're racing to prove to Kaguya's father that the Jet Racing club at their school should be allowed to continue after he convinced the school board to end it.
Hell's Kitchen is a racing team and an idol group. Pan Dina and Pan Ziyu, the petite representation for this game, are trying to determine whether they want to entirely focus on being idols or racers.
The Unkai Surfers from the California Coast are American weebs named Jennifer Peach and Emily Orange. They're obsessed with manga and anime and are racing to become actual ninjas. They're usually the comic relief, speaking in simultaneously broken and over formal Japanese.
MKHU, also known as Baba girls, is my favorite team. Manatsu Shiraishi and Yuzu Midorikawa, gyaru (gal) girls who are hip, dress sexy and care deeply for old people. They love racing but have low opinions of their abilities. At the end of the day, they race as hard as possible to make the people they care for at the old folks' home happy.
Sea Serpents is the duo of Fuka Tamaki and Inori Misuda. Shrine maidens who race as a ritual but don't really enjoy it. As their story unfolds, Fuka learns to accept both sides of Inori's personality. Then they profess their love for each other. And I don't mean in the typical anime way, these two characters are canonically lesbians and in love with each other.
Team GRINDCORE are the villains that don't reveal themselves until all the other arcs have been completed. Kamui Kurnai and Naraku Mamiya spent their whole lives working for a shady organization to travel the world and gather "red bijou." They then took up Jet Racing after the organization cut them off. They believe they have no future, so it becomes their mission to crush the dreams of the other racers. Naturally, they all end up being friends.
Gameplay
The core gameplay combines a kart racing game and something like Wave Race 64. You race around 8 different maps, each with various iterations to mix things up. Much of the racing feels like an approximation of Mario kart. Ramps, boosts, weapons to pick up and use, and special abilities. There's even drift boosting, something I didn't realize was possible in the water, but then again, I'm not a physicist, so how should I know how stuff like that works.
When I played the tutorial, I kept thinking, "This is way too many mechanics." Especially since all the on-screen instructions showed mouse/keyboard instructions, even though the game fully supports controller play. Once you work out what controller buttons map to what, it's effortless to get the hang of racing. And the racing feels good. You get to go really fast, thread the needle, blow up the other racers with water missiles and tornadoes, and do sick flips. I was prepared for the racing to feel phoned in or devastatingly hard, but it was neither. It was thoughtfully executed and fun.
Despite how good the racing feels, I have 2 complaints about it. My first complaint is that it's way too easy. I found myself constantly half a map ahead of the rival racers. Making all the weapons and special abilities I had ready to go completely useless. With how easy it was and how little money you win after each race, I was sure I had some settings wrong. In the Senran Kagura games, each level has a difficulty setting, which allows you to get significantly more money and experience by making the level harder. But Jet Girls has no such difficulty option. In the last 2 chapters, I finally had to upgrade the jet skis (a mechanic I primarily ignored). Still, as soon as I did, it went right back to being a cakewalk. Only 3 or 4 races required me to retry. I usually fell behind from not paying attention, not because the AI racers were playing better.
Most of the story is delivered in visual novel style sections before and after each race. Generally, just a single short scene. These scenes are fully voiced and use the in-game models, complete with whatever outfits you put them in. Typical fare for this type of game; you can see the same thing in Peach Beach Splash and Estival Versus.
Takeaways
While the racing was fun and I enjoyed the characters, a few things bugged me in this game. My primary issue is the lack of a stripping mechanic. I know that this isn't Senran Kagura, and it doesn't have to do everything that SK does. Still, the stripping has always been such an integral part of the games that it's bizarre that it's not present here. We have the same sexy outfits and the same busty characters. We even have the same weapons as Peach Beach Splash. Yet, no matter how many times you attack another character, you'll never see their clothes rip. That's what I was most disappointed in.
Horny Parts
-
Special Tricks
Kind of just a mid-race zoom in on the racers. Not particularly sexy but that's why it's listed first!
-
Costumes
You'll see some old classic standbys, as well as some new styles
-
Minigames
I was hoping for something a little hornier for these games, something like the minigames in Omega Labyrinth, but we really only get a few good glimpses
-
Renders
At various times throughout the story you'll get a 2D render applicable to the story. Usually nothing too steamy but still sexy
-
Breast Expansion
One of the core parts of Ryōbi's character in the SK games is that her boobs grow when she transforms into shinobi mode. It's just a toggle here, no fun animation, but still great
-
This Part In The Opening Video
Nice
Horniest Part
-
NUDE MOD
Ah yes. The sure fire way to turn a less-than-sexy game into a full on boob-fest. As usual, moderchan delivers.
Rating
Neutral
The racing is fun but even with the nude mod the bottom line is this game just wasn't as sexy as I expect from Honey∞Parade.
